Weather headlines: El Nino continues to propel warm December

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 05:27:11 GMT

Weather headlines: El Nino continues to propel warm December Chicagoans enjoyed the warmest daytime high temperature — 56 degrees — in three weeks Friday.  Note since Nov. 17's high of 60 degrees in the city, has it been warmer here. The high of 56 Friday was 17 degrees above normal and the warmest Dec. 8 in Chicago of the past 32 years (since a 60-deg high on Dec 8, 1991).Only five Dec. 8's in the 81 years since 1942 (the year Midway Airport became the official weather Chicago observation site, with O'Hare to follow in 1970) have been warmer. That means Friday was among the 6% warmest Dec. 8's on the books here over the past 81 years—and it put today's warmth in rare meteorological territory. The warmth Friday was the result of Pacific air — and indications are that a temperature downturn Sunday and into the open days of next week will be temporary. Westerly upper winds are to keep the warmer than normal temperatures dominant over the coming two weeks, which takes up to Christmas week itself. The El Nino pattern — known for producing above nor...

Bret Stephens: Silence is violence — but not when it comes to Israeli rape victims?

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 05:27:11 GMT

Bret Stephens: Silence is violence — but not when it comes to Israeli rape victims? On Sunday, CNN’s Dana Bash asked Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., why so many progressive women have been silent about the extensive reports of widespread rape and sexual assault carried out by Hamas against Israeli women during the massacres of Oct. 7.What followed was a master class in evasion, both-sidesism and changing the subject from the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.“I’ve condemned what Hamas has done,” Jayapal allowed, briefly, before moving immediately to condemn Israel. Bash persisted: “I was just asking about the women, and you turned it back to Israel. I’m asking about Hamas.”“I’ve already answered your question, Dana,” Jayapal replied, adding that while rape was “horrific,” it “happens in war situations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas obviously are using these as tools. However, I think we have to be balanced about bringing in the outrages against Palestinians.”A day after the CNN interview, I attended a conference at the United Nations headquarters in...

The Exit Interview with Jack Price: Former Colorado Rapids captain refutes explanation for his exit, sets sights on chasing trophies Out of everything Jack Price has missed about soccer over the last two injury-riddled seasons, it’s the hunt for greatness with his teammates he’s fixated on the most.In his mind, Price knows he can still compete for trophies in the upper echelons of professional soccer. He also knows his next hunt won’t be with the Colorado Rapids while wearing the captain’s armband, but rather back in England.Price, now a free agent after six seasons in Colorado, spoke to The Denver Post and other local outlets earlier this week for a final “exit interview.” He detailed a contentious end to his time as a Burgundy Boy, how veterans influenced his leadership and where his ambitions are at as he faces a new chapter in his career. One thing is abundantly clear about “Pricey”: He is gearing up for the chase once again.“The best feeling for me, it is as simple as standing in that corridor waiting to walk out in front of the fans at home, leading the b...
