Eclectic flavors have their place. But there’s something so nostalgic, so all-American-childhood evoking about a classic ice cream sundae. The frosty scoops of vanilla ice cream. The hot fudge swirling round. A little butterscotch to gild that particular chilly lily. Sprinkles! Nuts! A cherry on top!You don’t need to hit the supermarket freezer case or even the local creamery to sate that craving. You can make no-churn ice cream at home and the orange-tinged hot fudge and butterscotch sauces to top it all off.The no-churn approach is an America’s Test Kitchen hack that lets you create deeply vanilla, velvety ice cream without an ice cream maker — just a blender and, of course, your freezer. Here’s the ice cream how-to, plus two flavor variations and four recipes for toppings, including a butterscotch sauce for caramel-ophobes, which calls for cooking brown sugar and butter together to give the sauce its complexity, sans candy thermometers. Also in the mi...Elizabeth Holmes’ sentence reduced by almost two years

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is now scheduled to get out of prison nearly two years earlier than her original sentence mandated, according to an update from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.Holmes, 39, surrendered herself for imprisonment May 30, to start serving a sentence of 11 years and three months. But her updated release date is December 29, 2032, just over the 9 1/2 years that federal prison rules say she must remain locked up at a minimum. The prisons bureau confirmed Holmes’ new release date, but said privacy, safety and security reasons prevent it from discussing inmates’ release plans.Generally, those incarcerated in federal prisons can earn 54 days of “Good Conduct Time” off their sentences for each year of their sentence, according to the prisons bureau. Eligible inmates can also earn time off from their sentences by participating and completing programs for reducing post-prison re-offending, and educational, health, recovery, victim-impact and emp...Fourteen residents displaced in Oakland apartment fire

By Kyle Stock | BloombergConsider it ironic, or at least a little poetic: Electric vehicles, great for combating climate change, don’t do well in extreme heat. It’s a paradox being thrown into relief as multiple US states bake under heat waves that are becoming more frequent and more intense.High temperatures aren’t kryptonite for battery-powered vehicles. An EV in a hot climate has to work harder to keep its battery and its passengers cool, but the car will function just fine. On a chemical level, though, extreme heat is akin to heart disease for EV batteries, or a mellow and slow-moving form of cancer. That’s because when temperatures climb, the ions in a car battery speed up. Once that happens, they often have trouble attaching to the anode or cathode. The pressure and speed can also create small cracks, which slow chemical reactions and make for less usable battery life.To some degree, this happens with any fast-charging cycle. Using a Tesla Supercharger will move ions more quick...Virginia rises to No. 2 on CNBC’s Best States for Business list

Virginia ranks No. 2 this year on CNBC’s list of America’s Best States for Business, just behind North Carolina, and up from No. 3 on last year’s list.Virginia has ranked No. 1 five times since CNBC launched the annual rankings in 2007, more than any other state. The last year Virginia topped the list was in 2021 (CNBC did not publish the list in 2020 because of the pandemic). While Virginia was this year’s runner-up, it did finish No. 1 for education, for what CNBC calls strong support for K-12 and postsecondary schools. The state did, however, get dinged for high costs.Virginia also ranked in the top 10 for other categories, including workforce, infrastructure, business friendliness and access to capital.CNBC’s annual list scores all 50 states on a total of 86 metrics in 10 broad categories which make states competitive.Maryland appeared almost halfway down the list at No. 28, with poor scores for the cost of doing business. In ranking North Carolina No...Suspect arrested after Humvee plows into Army headquarters building at Georgia base

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court has again blocked construction on a segment of a contentious natural gas pipeline being built through Virginia and West Virginia, this time doing so even after Congress ordered the project’s approval. The stay issued Monday by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond comes after Congress passed legislation last month requiring all necessary permits be issued for construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The law also stripped the 4th Circuit from jurisdiction over the case.Environmentalists, though, argued that Congress overstepped its authority by enacting the law, saying it violates the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution.“Congress cannot pick winners and losers in pending litigation by compelling findings or results without supplying new substantive law for the courts to apply,” lawyers for the environmentalists wrote in court papers. The law was passed last month as part of a bipartisan bill to raise the d...“Pensé que me iba a matar”: mujer sobrevive brutal ataque en Safeway en DC
